Milestone in Motion

 

Milestone artists at the Day Treatment & Deaf Services program in Wilkinsburg got a chance to put their art into motion this fall, by making an animation video with guest artists from the Schmutz Company.  In the film, colorful vintage cars from the 1960s and 1970s zip and swerve along hand-painted roads, trees, flowers, animals, buildings and highway signs.  Milestone artist Victoria R. said the whole project “brought some liveliness into the atmosphere.  I loved it.”

A technique called stop-motion animation was used.  Basically, a series of pictures are taken, and the cars are moved a little bit at a time between each photo.  When all the photos are played one after another in a video, the audience sees the cars moving.   Under the guidance of the Schmutz Company’s Dave English and Dan Orkoskey, the Art Group finished their first film.  You can see the finished product at the end of the video below.
